Supporting Newcomer Immigrant and Refugee Students in Higher Education
October 20 @ 12:20 pm - 1:00 pm CDT
Presenter: Yacoub Aljaffery, Assistant Professor, Education
Our campus is welcoming a growing number of newcomer immigrant and refugee students. These students bring with them tremendous assets—multilingualism, global perspectives, cultural knowledge, lived experiences, and strong motivation tied to family and community goals. At the same time, they face unique challenges as they adapt to both the academic expectations and the hidden curriculum of the U.S. college system.
This informative workshop will equip faculty to support newcomer immigrant and refugee students by recognizing their assets, modifying curriculum, and applying inclusive strategies that build on multilingualism, global perspectives, and diverse academic needs.
If you need any disability-related accommodation to fully participate in this event, please contact University Events at events@augsburg.edu. Please allow for sufficient time to arrange the accommodation.
