A collaborative event together with both of the organizations as hosts, PMWC (Poetry and Meaningful Writing Club) and PASU (Pan-Afrikan Student Union) in celebration of Black History Month. Honing in on celebrating the highly influential Black Activist, Poet, and Playwright Langston Hughes and his poem titled “I, Too”, which will cultivate the theme of the Haiku Competition as “Perseverance”. Along with the Open – Mic initiated through PASU during the celebration, the PMWC will host a Haiku competition surrounding the theme of perseverance. A small form of poetry originating in Japan that can be depicted as having three lines, with ordered syllables (1st line = 5 syllables, 2nd line = 7 syllables, 3rd line = 5 syllables). This competition’s winners will be decided by the audience along with the PMWC board in which there will be 10 finalists, and from the 10 finalists – 5 winners, with all 10 being given appropriate rewards. 
During this celebration, lots snacks will be offered, tons of arts and crafts such as paint, paper, and notebooks will be offered, and a few of the PMWC board members will perform a spoken word piece surrounding the theme of “Perseverance” in relevance to Langston’s poem “I, Too”. For the Open – Mic, PASU will be rewarding one individual during the event for “Best Overall Open – Mic Performance” of the Celebration.
We hope in this Celebration, to not only bring individuals closer to the world of Poetry in correspondence to black joy, but to also create a comfortable and loving space for students to express themselves openly, and compete on a communal and expressional level. Organizing a space to celebrate Black History Month and Langston Hughes in a spiritual, compassionate, loving, competitive, fun, and community – oriented manner for the students attending Augsburg University.
