The music therapy department  is going to be going to South Africa this upcoming July 7th-17th 2024!

They will be taking a course that explores meanings and expressions of music, health, illness, and healing transculturally. The focus of this course is on developing an understanding of individuals, families, groups and communities with diverse cultural backgrounds and the use of music in community and for healing within their culture.

This program will draw from local music therapists and those engaged in traditional African music to showcase the variety of music and cultures within South Africa. 

Additional Program Activities 

• Engage directly with a variety of South African music therapists at hospitals and clinics
• Meet a local instrument artisan and visit a local instrument shop
• Lessons on a local instrument
• Visit the Apartheid Museum
• Tour at the Pilanesburg Game Reserve
• Explore the Lisedi Village Cultural Center, to learn about the history of South African tribes, and listen to traditional musical performances and a cultural play
• Guided walking tours
• church service at Regina Mundi Catholic Church, famous institution in Soweto neighborhood
