SUMMARY:Guest Speaker\, Rob Kapilow "Listening for the hmmm..."
DESCRIPTION:Based on a passage from Ann Lamott’s writer’s manual\, Bird by Bird\, about finding beginnings\, finding your voice\, and finding what contribution you are meant to make. Discovering what makes you go hmmm… and learning to act on it. Making what you decide to do\, grow\nout of who you decide to be. Lessons learned from Yale and Broadway; NPR and PBS; Dr. Seuss and the Polar Express; teenage suicide victims on the Golden Gate Bridge and theBlackfoot Indian reservation in Montana. \nKapilow’s work is astonishingly broad\, including his What Makes It Great?® presentations (now for over twenty seasons in New York and Boston)\, his family compositions and Family Musik® events\, his “Citypieces”\, and residencies with institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. The reach of his interactive activities is wide\, from Native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to audiences in Kyoto and Kuala Lumpur\, and from tots barely out of diapers to musicologists in Ivy League programs. Kapilow is a newly appointed Artistic Partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, which is generously sponsoring his appearances at Augsburg University

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker\, Rob Kapilow "Instructions for living a musical life"
DESCRIPTION:Based on Mary Oliver’s 7-word poem\, “Instructions for living a life” that will be relevant to all musicians regardless of instrument\, level of achievement\, genre\, or future plans. It’s an interactive program about paying attention\, listening for possibility\, what we don’t know\nwe don’t know\, the difference between hearing and listening\, and the route to a meaningful and purposeful musical life in the 21st century. \nKapilow’s work is astonishingly broad\, including his What Makes It Great?® presentations (now for over twenty seasons in New York and Boston)\, his family compositions and Family Musik® events\, his“Citypieces”\, and residencies with institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. SUMMARY:Crying Earth Rise Up
DESCRIPTION:The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Crying Earth Rise Up.  Crying Earth Rise Up tells the story of Debra White Plume and Elisha Yellow Thunder’s efforts to stop the uranium mining contaminating their community’s drinking water. Informed by Native perspectives and belief systems\, the film addresses the sacred relationship between water and life itself\, as well as the conflicts between nuclear power companies\, activists\, and locals. With a nuanced look at what is becoming an increasingly common environmental battle\, the film offers a case study of contemporary conservation efforts in the face of corporate and capitalistic interests (Documentary Educational Resources).

SUMMARY:Crying Earth Rise Up
DESCRIPTION:Crying Earth Rise Up\, narrated by Tantoo Cardinal\, tells the story of Debra White Plume and Elisha Yellow Thunder’s efforts to stop the uranium mining contaminating their community’s drinking water.
