SUMMARY:Workshop: Korean traditional music and experiential learning for music students
DESCRIPTION:Korean Traditional Music and Experiential Learning for Music Students \nMusicians from Korea will introduce two key instruments of Korean traditional music: the gayageum\, a plucked zither\, and the janggu\, an hourglass-shaped drum. Attendees will not only gain an understanding of the instruments and the various traditional genres in which they are used\, but they will also have the opportunity to interact with the instruments directly\, learning to play basic traditional rhythms and folk melodies. \nFREE but registration required – Contact Prof Lee: leejuy@augsburg.eduRegistration link: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1FtSKVKowhwXdJmQLFotNrmcpSNni9U_u3_hcxtkogEU/edit?usp=sharing \nDr. Hyunchae KimHyunchae Kim majored in gayageum at Seoul National University\, where she also earned her Master’s and Doctorate degrees\, focusing on gayageum sanjo. She has won several prestigious awards\, including the Presidential Prize at the 2019 Gurye Gayageum Competition\, and is a certified apprentice of Gayageum Sanjo & Byeongchang\, a National Intangible Cultural Asset. As a soloist and ensemble musician\, she has premiered works by contemporary composers such as Hyo-shin Na and Baudouin de Jaer\, releasing albums featuring both traditional and modern repertoire. She has taught gayageum at Seoul National University and Gachon University and has published research on the history of gayageum sanjo. Since 2023\, she has been an Artist in Residence at the Korean Performing Arts Institute of Chicago (KPAC)\, where she teaches\, performs\, and directs the SoriBeat youth instrumental ensemble. \nJiwon Yoo \nJiwon Yoo is a skilled gayageum performer who was trained at the National Gugak High School and Ewha Womans University. She is a designated trainee of National Intangible Cultural Heritage No. 23 for Gayageum Sanjo and Byeongchang and has won multiple awards\, including the Grand Prize at the 10th Uijeongbu Gayageum Competition. She is an active member of various ensembles\, including Soseol and Siseon. \nJiyeon WonJiyeon Won graduated from the National Gugak High School in Korea and is currently studying Korean traditional percussion at the Korea National University of Arts. She has performed internationally with the school’s Sorinuri Art Troupe\, showcasing traditional Korean music in New York\, Canada\, and Thailand.
