SUMMARY:Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. Commencement
DESCRIPTION:Augsburg University Virtual Annual Martin Luther King Jr. commencement is on January 18th\, 2021\, from 11:00 am – 12:00 pm. The virtual gathering will include student and alumni performances. Our theme is ‘Art is Activism and Healing.’ There will be a small art gallery in the library and the Christensen Center on the first floor. This gallery will be available for the Augsburg Community from Jan. 18th – Jan. 22nd. If you are not able to come to campus\, we have a 60 piece virtual gallery available on the Pan-Afrikan Website and MSS Facebook page. Which will be available from Jan. 18th – March 1st\, 2021. \nStick around after the convocation for a zoom film screening of ‘Higher Learning’ directed by John Singleton from 2 pm-5 pm. There will be a discussion after the film. \n  \n“The time is always right to do what is right\,” Martin Luther King Jr.

DESCRIPTION:2020 Augsburg MLK Convocation \nMonday\, January 20\, 2020 \n1:00pm – 3:00pm \nChapel \nDr. John S Wright.: “Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community? \nJohn S. Wright is the Morse-Amoco Distinguished Teaching Full Professor of African American & African Studies and English at the University of Minnesota. Wright\, who was born in Minneapolis\, earned a Ph.D. in American Studies and the History of African peoples\, an M.A. in English and American literature\, and a Bachelor’s of Electrical Engineering at the University of Minnesota. He helped lead the student movement that founded the University’s Department of African American & African Studies\, which he chaired for three terms\, and its Martin Luther King Program\, which he administered from 1970-73. Wright also built a major in Afro-American and African Studies at Carleton College\, where he taught from 1973-83.

DESCRIPTION:The Sankofa series is a community gathering and conversation on the recently published book\, Towards an African Education: Selected Writings on the Education and Development of Children of African Heritage edited by Mahmoud El-Kati. In this publication\, ten educators-scholars-activists share their enlightening\, relevant and thought-provoking essays on this topic. \nThe event will be keynoted by Haki Madhubuti\, founder of Third World Press.
