SUMMARY:Guest Speaker\, Rob Kapilow "Listening for the hmmm..."
DESCRIPTION:Based on a passage from Ann Lamott’s writer’s manual\, Bird by Bird\, about finding beginnings\, finding your voice\, and finding what contribution you are meant to make. Discovering what makes you go hmmm… and learning to act on it. Making what you decide to do\, grow\nout of who you decide to be. Lessons learned from Yale and Broadway; NPR and PBS; Dr. Seuss and the Polar Express; teenage suicide victims on the Golden Gate Bridge and theBlackfoot Indian reservation in Montana. \nKapilow’s work is astonishingly broad\, including his What Makes It Great?® presentations (now for over twenty seasons in New York and Boston)\, his family compositions and Family Musik® events\, his “Citypieces”\, and residencies with institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. The reach of his interactive activities is wide\, from Native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to audiences in Kyoto and Kuala Lumpur\, and from tots barely out of diapers to musicologists in Ivy League programs. Kapilow is a newly appointed Artistic Partner with the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra\, which is generously sponsoring his appearances at Augsburg University

SUMMARY:Guest Speaker\, Rob Kapilow "Instructions for living a musical life"
DESCRIPTION:Based on Mary Oliver’s 7-word poem\, “Instructions for living a life” that will be relevant to all musicians regardless of instrument\, level of achievement\, genre\, or future plans. It’s an interactive program about paying attention\, listening for possibility\, what we don’t know\nwe don’t know\, the difference between hearing and listening\, and the route to a meaningful and purposeful musical life in the 21st century. \nKapilow’s work is astonishingly broad\, including his What Makes It Great?® presentations (now for over twenty seasons in New York and Boston)\, his family compositions and Family Musik® events\, his“Citypieces”\, and residencies with institutions as diverse as the National Gallery of Canada and Stanford University. The reach of his interactive activities is wide\, from Native American tribal communities in Montana and inner-city high school students in Louisiana to audiences in Kyoto and Kuala Lumpur\, and from tots barely out of diapers to musicologists in Ivy League programs. SUMMARY:Tienda (A Chamber Opera)
DESCRIPTION:Music by: Reinaldo Moya\nLibretto by: Caitlin Vincent \nBetween 1929 and 1936\, nearly two million men and women of Mexican heritage were deported from the United States and repatriated to Mexico. Prompted by the economic downturn of the Great Depression amid wide-spread anti-Mexican sentiment\, national repatriation efforts took the form of harassment\, brutal raids\, government coercion\, and abuse\, in which anyone who looked Mexican could be targeted by immigration agents and relief workers.  In the end\, approximately 60% of those sent “home” to Mexico were American citizens. \nWhile Los Angeles and Detroit were focal points of the deportation frenzy\, the small Mexican colonia in St. Paul\, Minnesota did not escape the repatriation drives: on November 10\, 1932\, eighty-six people from sixteen families\, or 15 percent of the local Mexican population\, were put on a train to the Mexican border. \nSet against the framework of these deportations\,Tienda tells the story of Luis Garzón\, a Mexican musician who immigrated to Minneapolis in 1886 and opened a small Mexican grocery store\, or tienda\, in St. Paul in the 1920s. While Luis had married an American woman and was fully integrated into Minneapolitan society\, his store served as a community hub for the newest arrivals from Mexico\, many of whom had fled the Mexican Revolution and now toiled in the sugar beet farms of rural Minnesota. \nShifting between Luis’s shop in the 1930s and his early years in America\, Tienda explores the immigrant experience: what must be left behind—and what cannot be forgotten—on the journey to a new home. \nThe opera is composed by Augsburg Music faculty member Reinaldo Moya and will also include the Augsburg Orchestra & The Augsburg Choir. \nPerformances:\nFebruary 21 and 22\, 2020 – 7 p.m.\nHoversten Chapel\, Foss Center\, Augsburg University \nTickets for Tienda:\nReservations available beginning January 20
