DESCRIPTION:The Pre-Med Student Association invites the Augsburg community to join us in giving back through a Food Drive supporting local homeless shelters in the Augsburg area. As future healthcare professionals\, it is essential to cultivate empathy\, compassion\, and community awareness—values that lie at the heart of good patient care. This event is an opportunity to put those values into practice by helping provide food resources to those in need.\nWe will be collecting non-perishable canned and dried food items at our tabling event in Christensen Center. For every 10 cans donated\, participants will receive 1 hour of volunteering credit. Each donor will also receive a certificate of appreciation recognizing their contribution.\nThe food drive will take place over three days:\nMonday\, October 27 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nWednesday\, October 29 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nThursday\, October 30 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nYour donations will make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. SUMMARY:2025 Torstenson Lecture—The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race\, Violence\, and the Politics of Policing in America
DESCRIPTION:The 17th Annual Torstenson Lecture in Sociology\, featuring Michelle S. Phelps\, Ph.D. \nFollowing the police killing of George Floyd in 2020\, Minneapolis became the epicenter of fiery protests over police violence and the failures of police reform. In response\, members of the city council pledged to “end” the police department. The Minneapolis Reckoning tells the story of how the city appeared to arrive at the brink of police abolition after years of Black Lives Matter activism—and what happened after. This account of the city’s struggles over what constitutes real accountability\, justice\, and safety offers a vitally important picture of the possibilities and limits of challenging police power in America. \nMichelle S. Phelps is Professor of Sociology at the University of Minnesota\, Twin Cities. She is the coauthor of Breaking the Pendulum: The Long Struggle Over Criminal Justice (Oxford\, 2017) and the author of The Minneapolis Reckoning: Race\, Violence\, and the Politics of Policing in America (Princeton\, 2024). Her award-winning research on the criminal legal system has been published in leading disciplinary and interdisciplinary academic journals and featured in major media outlets including the Washington Post\, TIME Magazine\, and The New Yorker.

SUMMARY:Cans for Compassion: A Pre-Med Food Drive
DESCRIPTION:The Pre-Med Student Association invites the Augsburg community to join us in giving back through a Food Drive supporting local homeless shelters in the Augsburg area. As future healthcare professionals\, it is essential to cultivate empathy\, compassion\, and community awareness—values that lie at the heart of good patient care. This event is an opportunity to put those values into practice by helping provide food resources to those in need.\nWe will be collecting non-perishable canned and dried food items at our tabling event in Christensen Center. For every 10 cans donated\, participants will receive 1 hour of volunteering credit. Each donor will also receive a certificate of appreciation recognizing their contribution.\nThe food drive will take place over three days:\nMonday\, October 27 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nWednesday\, October 29 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nThursday\, October 30 | 12:00–1:00 PM\nYour donations will make a tangible difference in the lives of individuals and families experiencing food insecurity. DESCRIPTION:Join East Phillips Neighborhood Institute Urban Farmer\, Kieran Morris\, and the Sabo Center’s Community Changemakers to learn about the way that growing food in our cities builds health\, power and agency in our neighborhoods. This will be the first of two talks by Kieran\, and a series of talks and workshops from EPNI staff over the remainder of the semester.\nKieran is a community organizer\, farmer and canoe guide\, specializing in Green and Blue work\, bringing practical skills alongside traditional knowledge and grassroots mentality to connect people with the land and water. At EPNI\, Kieran coordinates the Outdoor Farm project\, which grows produce and medicine at sites across East Phillips\, and hosts free educational workshops.
