SUMMARY:Faculty and Staff of Color Lunch
DESCRIPTION:If you have received this email it means that your name was on a calendar invite to a Faculty and Staff of Color Lunch meeting invite last academic year\, that you signed up to be added to this invite list at a new faculty or staff orientation\, or that a colleague suggested to our department that you be added. (Please note that at any time you may ask to be removed from the invitation list for the Faculty and Staff of Color Lunches.) \nThis academic year the Faculty and Staff of Color Lunches will be a little bit different from previous years. This academic year the lunches will be sponsored and scheduled by the new Equity and Inclusion Initiatives Department. The main focus of these lunches will be for faculty and staff of color at Augsburg University to gather\, break bread\, and connect. There will be no set agenda other than the expectation to try to get to know folks you don’t already know and to build community. Also there will be a small amount of time at the end of the lunches set aside for folks to make announcements. The plan is for lunch to be provided at every gathering for the entire academic year\, barring major/unforeseen budget issues. Because the amount of food ordered will be determined based on the number of individuals who reply “yes” to the calendar invite\, it is essential that folks respond to the calendar invites in a timely fashion. \nIn closing\, have a wonderful day and I hope to see you all at our first lunch! \nBest\, Joanne

SUMMARY:Intercultural Communication and Conflict Styles Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop makes use of the Intercultural Conflict Style (ICS) Inventory\, which describes an individual’s preferred approach or style for resolving conflict by reflecting the individual’s culturally learned patterns for dealing with disagreements and expressing emotions. Additionally\, this workshop will not only teach individuals about their own preferred approach and style\, but also about the preferred approaches and styles of others. Finally\, this workshop will give participants tangible skills that can be used when navigating communication and conflict across cultural differences. The increased understanding of intercultural communication and conflict styles and tangible skills participants will receive from this workshop can both enhance their overall intercultural competence\, increase their effectiveness when working to resolve disagreements across cultures\, and help them to create more inclusive campus spaces at Augsburg. \nFor more information about this workshop\, email inclusion@augsburg.edu.To register for this workshop\, click HERE.

SUMMARY:Canceled - Destigmatizing Mental Health in Higher Education
DESCRIPTION:Join Equity & Inclusion Initiatives and NAMI Minnesota to have greater discussion around de-stigmatizing mental health in higher education.\nHow do we better understand and support students with mental health concerns\, especially when those students identities and believes may not align with ours? How do we talk about mental health practices from an anti-racial lens – knowing that western practices can be re-traumatizing and triggering?\nNAMI Minnesota champions justice\, dignity and respect for all people affected by mental illnesses. Through education\, support and advocacy we strive to eliminate the pervasive stigma of mental illnesses\, affect positive changes in the mental health system\, and increase the public and professional understanding of mental illnesses.

SUMMARY:White Fragility and Microagressions In the Workplace: When Good People Behave Badly\, DAY 1
DESCRIPTION:When: April 22\, 2020 11:00 am – 12:00 pm CST\nLevel: Intermediate\nTrack: Social Responsibility\nPresenter: Nancy Michael\, AMAZEworks\nCost: FREE \n\nDue to overwhelming demand\, this webinar is being offered on three separate days. This is Day 1 of 3 dates offered for this webinar. Additional dates available are located below: \n\nDay 2 **AT CAPACITY**\nDay 3\, Spots Available\n\n  \nOften\, good intentions receive more attention than the negative impacts they may produce. In the same way white superiority created the systems and structures we have in place\, it also created the ability for the people who benefit overlook the effects on those who are marginalized or injured. When confronted with these truths\, the reactions of many if not most white Americans fall under the category of white fragility. \nThis is an intense focus on the feelings of white people when their understanding of themselves and their world is challenged. \nWhite fragility feeds on the fact that white people generally do not see themselves in racial terms and therefore are not affected by racism. It also works through a simplistic understanding of racism and a belief that white people are generally objective and free of bias. This webinar highlights the ways white fragility appear in the workplace and how it can be addressed for individual and organizational growth. \nLearning Outcomes\n\nGain an understanding of where white fragility comes from\nExplore examples of how it appears in equity work and in the workplace\nExamine strategies that address white fragility and create buy-in
