DESCRIPTION:The Minnesota Urban Debate League is a program of Augsburg University. We provide academic competitive debate programming to Twin Cities high schools and middle schools. Our mission is to cultivate engaged learners\, critical thinkers\, and effective advocates through the art of debate. \nWe’re planning to shift back to in-person programming with COVID-19 precautions in place- which means we need new supplies! \nHelp us meet the moment by donating new or gently used supplies\, including: \n\nExpanding file folders\n1-inch+ binders\nHighlighters\nSticky notes\nClorox wipes\nLegal pads\nBlack\, blue\, and red pens\n\nCheck out our Amazon wishlist & help us equip our high school national topic debaters by the first tournament on September 25th!  \nOur office is in the basement of the Foss Lobeck Miles Center. If you or your workplace have gently-used supplies\, please contact us at mnudl@augsburg.edu so we can set up a time for pickup/dropoff. Explore these questions and more as filmmaker Shalini Kantayya explores algorithmic oppression and what can be done about it in her film “Coded Bias”. \nModern society sits at the intersection of two crucial questions: What does it mean when artificial intelligence (AI) increasingly governs our liberties? And what are the consequences for the people AI is biased against ? When MIT Media Lab researcher Joy Buolamwini discovers the most facial-recognition software does not accurately identify darker-skinned faces and the faces of women\, she delves into an investigation of widespread bias in algorithms. As it turns out\, artificial intelligence is not neutral\, and women are leading the charge to ensure our civil rights are protected.
