SUMMARY:Disability Advocate Matthew Weed: Overcoming Challenges Through Determination\, Discipline and Community Building
DESCRIPTION:  \n\n\n\nThe Augsburg CLASS Office and the Yale Alumni Association in Minnesota will be hosting Dr. Matthew Weed for an inspirational evening of stories about overcoming challenges. The event will be free to attend and includes light snacks in Augsburg’s  Hagfors Center 150B. \nMatthew Weed is the first totally blind and brittle type I diabetic to graduate from Yale University (B.A. in Political Science\, 1993; Ph.D. in Genetics\, 2004). He also holds degrees from Harvard (M.A.in Genetics\, 1996) and Princeton (MPA\, 1995). \nLow vision was diagnosed when Matthew was six weeks old. Diabetes was diagnosed when he was one year old. By age 8 he had lost all of his sight. When Matthew was 19\, his father died of diabetic complications. In spite of all these challenges\, Matthew has found ways to live a full and impactful life: besides his spectacular academic achievements\, he has completed a rollerblading marathon\, skis\, engages in other outdoor pursuits\, and has traveled around the world—twice. He has done all of these things with his own determination but also the support and assistance of literally thousands of caring\, thoughtful people. \nHaving a versatile skill set\, Matthew has contributed to knowledge and opportunity. In 1990\, while an undergraduate at Yale University\, Matthew co-created one of the first methods for making electronic text available to the reading challenged. Some believe that the “Yale Text Scanning system” was an early step toward E-books. As a graduate student\, Matthew worked closely with the NIH to help it make important databases and tools accessible to the reading challenged. From 2010 to 2012\, Matthew helped open the Wisconsin Institute for Discovery\, a $150 million research Center at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Today he helps institutions make their data and facilities more accessible to everyone; works as an educational search consultant for American\, Brazilian and Chinese students; and is a motivational and topical speaker in the US and China. \nDr. Weed asks you to bring business cards to facilitate connecting to others about the things you do and care about—which he will ask you to briefly describe at the end of his talk. \nPlease feel free to learn more about Matthew through this short video: https://vimeo.com/118231144

SUMMARY:Crying Earth Rise Up
DESCRIPTION:The Augsburg Native American Film Series presents Crying Earth Rise Up.  Crying Earth Rise Up tells the story of Debra White Plume and Elisha Yellow Thunder’s efforts to stop the uranium mining contaminating their community’s drinking water. Informed by Native perspectives and belief systems\, the film addresses the sacred relationship between water and life itself\, as well as the conflicts between nuclear power companies\, activists\, and locals. With a nuanced look at what is becoming an increasingly common environmental battle\, the film offers a case study of contemporary conservation efforts in the face of corporate and capitalistic interests (Documentary Educational Resources).

SUMMARY:What's happening in CCV? A brown bag lunch conversation
DESCRIPTION:Augsburg’s Christensen Center for Vocation is entering a new chapter\, with a new vision for how this center can serve our students\, the mission of our institution\, and a growing network of faith-based community partners. We will be hosting two brown bag information lunches in the Augsburg Room on Nov. 20 and Nov. 26 from 12:00-1:00pm to share more about the direction CCV is heading. We hope you will consider joining us one of these days to learn more. Contact Kristina Fruge (frugek@augsburg. edu) or Jeremy Myers (myers@augsburg.edu) for more information. \nOur center is deeply engaged with congregational contexts doing the work of vocational discernment centered on their neighbors and neighborhoods. In our new vision for CCV\, these rich learning contexts can be combined with Augsburg’s unique approach to educating leaders who are informed citizens\, thoughtful stewards\, critical thinkers and responsible leaders. This will happen through a variety of initiatives\, some new and some existing ones that are being re-imagined towards this more intentional vision. Our aim is to create mutually beneficial learning partnerships between students\, faculty\, ministry leaders\, and congregations who share a commitment to being neighbor in real places with real people working to solve real world problems.
