An Enemy of the People examines how a community responds when the local doctor threatens to expose that the town’s water source they rely on for tourism is contaminated. It raises questions of how far a community will go to protect their town’s secret so they can keep tourism dollars coming and circumvent a path to financial ruin. Scenes and songs will happen in close proximity to the audience\, compelling them to feel as if they are part of the story. Immersed in the play’s dilemma\, audiences will find themselves part of the climactic ending of the play when they actually vote to shape the ending of the story. DESCRIPTION:The 45th Annual Augsburg University Advent Vespers\nSee Revealed Creation’s Splendor\nOur Advent Vespers theme this year is a response to the shared sense of anxiety we feel around the ongoing climate crisis. Gus Speth\, environmental lawyer and a US Advisor on climate change\, writes\, “I used to think that top environmental problems were biodiversity loss\, ecosystem collapse and climate change. I thought that thirty years of good science could address these problems. I was wrong…The top environmental problems are selfishness\, greed and apathy\, and to deal with these we need a cultural and spiritual transformation and we scientists don’t know how to do that…” \nOur common concern for creation begins with a transformation of the heart\, with a recognition that the world was created in Love and that we are called to live in harmony with it. For Christians\, the birth of Jesus represents God’s full identification with\, and within\, the created world. DESCRIPTION:Exciting opportunity\, Augsburg’s Schwartz School of the Arts will be participating for the first time in the Great Northern Festival (https://thegreatnorthernfestival.com/2025-festival). On Friday\, January 31\, 5-8 pm we are hosting an evening of narrative\, performing\, and visual arts that explore the impact of climate change on our physical and psychological worlds. As part of these events we are planning several performances of Terry Riley’s In C (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tbTn79x-mrI) and would love YOUR participation (faculty\, staff\, students)! \nONE mandatory rehearsal the day of the performance (Friday\, January 31) from 12:30-1:40 pm. We anticipate three performances throughout the evening\, each around 25 minutes in duration. There are several other pieces on the program related to the theme of climate change and the full program will rotate on the hour (5 pm\, 6 pm\, 7 pm). \nIf you are interested in participating\, please email Rachel Bergman (bergmanr@augsburg.edu) asap\, but no later than noon on MONDAY\, 1/27. The score is attached for your perusal and practice. Transposed parts are also available for Eb\, F\, and Bb instruments (let me know if you’d like a transposed part) and feel free to reach out with any questions.

A listener may initially perceive the music as static\, but the shifts become apparent and impactful over time. Likewise\, climate change operates on a long timescale\, with gradual shifts in temperature\, sea levels\, and weather patterns. We invite listeners to contemplate the powerful accumulation of small changes as they listen to this performance (renamed In “Sea” for this performance)\, accompanied by images of the Great Lakes and graphics documenting the impact of climate change on our region.
