DESCRIPTION:FREE and open to the public \nGuest Lecture by Dr. Philip Ewell on Thursday\, 3/21\, 2pm Sateren Auditorium \nTitle: “Racialized Musical (His)tories.” \n  \nAbstract:In certain languages the words for “history” and “story” are the same\, as inFrench (histoire) or Russian (история). “History” usually implies anaccurate account of past events\, while “story” usually refers to events thatmay or may not accurately reflect on the past\, embellished as necessary by a“storyteller.” But in this distinction\, race is rarely mentioned. Anyone\,irrespective of race\, can write histories or tell stories\, yet with remarkableconsistency in the academic study of music in the U.S.\, our histories have beenwritten by white persons\, usually men\, passing from generation to generationwith little divergence from narratives of “great works” of the “western canon.”And when a nonwhite voice challenges the white narrative\, efforts to stiflethat voice are swift and severe. In this talk I’ll expand on music’s historiesand stories\, and explain why the common American music curriculum is stillsegregated along racial lines. I’ll then suggest that we need to desegregate itand foreground race in our discussions so that all racial musics\, and musicalraces\, have a seat at the table and a voice in the conversation.

DESCRIPTION:Soomaal Visual Arts Fellowship is a partnership between Soomaal House of Art and Augsburg Galleries that aims to harness the power of art as a tool for intellectual and civic engagement by advocating and advancing the creative development of Somali visual artists. \nWASIMA FARAH  \nGrowing Pains II: Expected Disappointments | Gage Gallery \nFarah delves into the complex dynamics of the relationship between a mother and eldest daughter\, exploring themes of generational trauma\, emotional legacies\, and communication gaps. This second installment of her Growing Pains series includes a video installation and paintings centered around the color red (anger and wisdom) that encourage an open dialogue about hurt and healing\, offering space to express emotions and begin breaking the cycle of pain. \n \nMOHAMED HERSI \nTides of Tribulations: A Journey Through Solace | Christensen Gallery \nThrough a series of large scale paintings\, Hersi explores emotional states of being that shape both the present moments and fleeting memories of our human experience. From joy and hope to confusion and grief\, Hersi uses portraiture\, landscape\, and abstraction to reflect on what we currently hold and embrace\, and what we will perhaps always be sifting through. A moment can hold much emotion\, and emotions are what move us.
