SUMMARY:Inside Biden’s Cuba Policy Film Screening & Discussion with Cuban Journalist
DESCRIPTION:Augsburg CGEE invites everyone to join award-winning Cuban journalist and filmmaker\, Liz Oliva Fernández\, for a screening and Q&A of two new Belly of the Beast documentaries on Thursday\, November 2nd from 2 – 4:00 p.m. in Kennedy Center Room 303A. Details:Gracie Award-winning Cuban journalist Liz Oliva Fernández will visit Augsburg University to present a new documentary film\, Cuba in the Crosswinds \, produced by the independent media outlet\, Belly of the Beast. Filmed this year in New Jersey and Washington D.C.\, Cuba in the Crosswinds exposes the economic and political interests driving U.S. policy toward Cuba under the Biden administration\, which has mainly kept intact Trump’s “maximum pressure” sanctions on Cuba\, fueling an unprecedented wave of migration from the island. \nThe documentary’s presenter\, Liz Oliva Fernández\, is a Cuban journalist\, feminist and anti-racist activist who received the prestigious Gracie Award in 2021 alongside a host of celebrities\, including Kerry Washington and Lena Waithe. In 2021 she was also a co-winner of a One World Media Award\, besting BBC and Al Jazeera\, as well as a Telly Award for her groundbreaking work presenting\, reporting and producing The War on Cuba docuseries. Liz’s courageous and hard-hitting investigative journalism reveals the devastating impact of U.S. sanctions on the Cuban people\, offering a rarely-seen nuanced perspective on Cuba and U.S.-Cuba relations. \nCO-SPONSORED by Languages and Cross-Cultural Studies\, Latinx Student Services\, and Theater Arts. \nThis event is free and open to the public. To request a reasonable accommodation for this event\, please email Nichole at rohlfsen@augsburg.edu. SUMMARY:GlobalEd Talk: Youth Marginalization in Namibia
DESCRIPTION:This is an event for all Augsburg University faculty\, staff\, and students\, with CGEE’s Global Faculty member from Namibia\, Pinias Kashedi. \nThe Augsburg community is invited to join CGEE in welcoming Pinias Kashedi\, Global Faculty from Namibia\, on campus! He will be hosting a talk about the marginalization of youth in Southern Africa\, titled\, “Education Capture and Youth Marginalization in Namibia.” A brief description is below: \nUsing an historic perspective on Namibia\, the speaker will discuss the development of education from colonialism and through apartheid. The unemployment rate in Namibia is one of highest within Africa\, at 41%. Economic opportunities for young people are less compared to employed adults. There is also a very low youth representation in leadership and decision making structures. Most Namibian youth believe that political activism does not yield results. There are close to 90\,000 unemployed graduates\, some with graduate education qualifications\, in a country with a total population around 2.5 million. Colonial and social injustice are a factor to these issues\, but also an inherited education system which perpetuates economic and social marginalization of young people. What\, if anything\, is the Namibian government doing to address the issues? Mr. Kashedi will discuss all of this and much more at this invigorating global lecture! We will conclude the talk with a meet and greet with our colleague Pinias for you to get to know him better and welcome him to the Augsburg University community. \n\nWhen: Wednesday\, September 20th\nTime: 3:40 p.m.\nWhere: OGC 100\n\nALL are welcome to attend! Please RSVP here.
